Well prepared for a career in the business world
It was a career ambition, so Doreen Thunder knew she had better get the best training possible.
She found it at NorQuest College, where real-world business theory meets practical application in a mix of class-driven studies and on-the-job training.
“Originally when I started at NorQuest, I knew my goal would be to gain a position within Indigenous Services Canada (ISC). Being First Nations myself, the wellness of my community is very important to me,” says the 2015 graduate of the Administrative Professional program. “So I was adamant about completing my work practicum at ISC. I am grateful to the career advisor who established that first connection.”
That connection resulted in Thunder’s one-month practicum at ISC prior to graduation, and to full time employment. She is now a contributing member of the Engineering Services department, providing support with community infrastructure and First Nations relations.
“I felt very prepared as a result of the practicum, and I feel valued now as an employee. There were some high expectations on me coming into this office. Advanced Excel training at NorQuest allowed me to present strengthened Excel documents as part of my role and duties, and NorQuest’s business communications courses really enhanced my writing capabilities.”
But it wasn’t just the traditional education that Thunder appreciated from NorQuest, where faculty really take an interest in students’ success, both on the job and in life.
“I am grateful to NorQuest and all the faculty for caring about my education and about me as well. They really encouraged me to find my own potential and it developed a level of professionalism that I now carry forward. They equip students with both the education and personal skills needed to succeed in the workplace and in personal life.”
